Fire Horse Energy: Why Now Is the Time to Take Action in Midlife

Stop Procrastinating in Midlife: The Missing Step Between Knowing and Doing

One of the most frustrating parts of change for midlife women isn’t just knowing what to do — although that matters — it’s the point where there is a disconnect between knowing what you need to do… and actually doing it.

You can have the clarity.

You can understand what needs to change.
You can even feel ready for something different.

And yet… your life still doesn't move in the direction you want it to.

Over the past few weeks in this Fire Horse series, we’ve explored the journey from reflection into readiness — moving from the inward, clearing energy of the Wood Snake year into the forward-moving momentum of the Fire Horse.

We’ve worked through the stages of change:

Each of these steps has been essential.

But this is the final piece of the puzzle.

Because knowing what to do is never enough - you have to actually do it.

The Truth About Procrastination

When it comes to this step — that of actually taking action — this is where many midlife women get stuck.

Not because they are lazy.
Not because they lack motivation.

But because something deeper is happening.

Procrastination isn’t about bad time management or lack of desire.

It’s a form of misaligned self-protection.

When you begin to step outside of the life you’ve always known — even if that life no longer fits — your mind will often resist out of fear of the unknown.

Because what you have now is familiar, even if you don't particularly care for it, so your nervous system will try to maintain the status quo.

Even if the goal is something much better for you.

Even if it isn't that particularly hard to attain.

Your mind will only see it as uncertain…and then act to quietly sabotage you through tactics like procrastination.

You'll hesitate.
You'll delay.
You'll tell yourself you will start soon, when it's the "right time", but the right time never comes.

And without realising it, you continue to stay exactly where you are.

And this is exactly where the Fire Horse energy challenges you — because it doesn’t wait for certainty, it responds to movement.

How Procrastination Really Shows Up

It doesn’t always look like avoidance - there are very subtle ways we can sabotage ourselves.

In fact, it can often look like you're being more productive or efficient by the actions you've taken.

You might recognise yourself here:

“I just need to research this a bit more”
“I’ll start next week when things calm down”
“I need to do this first to prepare myself”
“I’ll do it when I have more time”

On the surface, these might feel reasonable.  It's that classic case of needing to do something and you find a hundred other things that need doing first before you can start - even as simple as I need to clean the house, put a load of washing on, reorganise my desk.

Sound familiar?  I know it did for me when I started acknowledging my own levels of procrastination, and understanding the fears that were driving them.

These actions can all seem reasonable at the time, but in reality they are just diversion tactics to stop you from starting something that could be scary.

This isn’t preparation.
It’s avoidance dressed up as progress.

One of the most common forms of procrastination is what I call false action.

You stay busy…
But not with the things that will actually move your life forward.

And the real step — the one that would actually change things — gets delayed over and over again.

Why This Happens (Even When You Want Change)

From the work I teach inside my Pathway — and from my own experience — this pattern is incredibly common.

Because when you begin to change your life, you are not just trying to change your current circumstances, you might also be attempting to change your identity.

You could be stepping away from:

  • old roles
  • old expectations
  • old versions of yourself

And that can create resistance, because initially it could be stepping into the unknown.

Old fears can resurface.
Old doubts can creep back in.
Other people's expectations and opinions can undermine you.

So your mind does what it thinks is safest.

It slows you down.

It creates distractions.

And it holds you back from doing the things that really will bring about that positive change - no matter how irrational that might seem.

The Shift: Action Creates Momentum (Not the Other Way Around)

Here is the part that changes everything.

Most people believe they need to feel ready before they act.

But the truth is the opposite.

Action is what creates readiness — and then builds momentum through each step you take.

You don’t build confidence by thinking about change.

You build it by taking steps regularly, and being witness to each success and improvement it might bring.

Every action becomes evidence:

“I did that”
“I followed through”
"I learned from this"
“I can do more”

And that is how self-belief is rebuilt — by taking those steps into the unknown and regardless of the outcome trusting yourself to keep trying, testing and doing the next thing.

Breaking the Pattern

In order to change this - you need to interrupt the pattern.

But, this doesn’t require a complete life overhaul or new habits, it doesn’t require a new schedule or routine.

What it needs is something much more powerful - Awareness.

When you notice yourself procrastinating, or that things aren't happening - stop and question yourself:

"Am I doing something that will actually move me forward…
or am I staying in what feels safe?"

Call it out.

Not with judgement — but with an awareness of what you are doing and why.

This needs constant vigilance, especially in the early stages when you haven't built your bank of successes to inspire you to take more action.

But, when you are clear as to what you are doing and why - you can then reprogram your thinking to ensure that you become less afraid to take each step.

Momentum doesn’t come from thinking about change. It comes from movement.

What Taking Action Actually Looks Like

This is where many women overcomplicate things.

Action doesn’t need to be dramatic.

It’s often very simple:

Sending the email you’ve been putting off
Having the conversation you’ve been avoiding
Starting before you feel completely ready
Saying no to something that drains you
Saying yes to something that excites you, even though you are afraid
Making time for something that matters
Making time for you

It’s not always comfortable.

But it is always authentic.

Each small step shifts something and that is the best way to overcome procrastination - to keep taking small steps forwards, especially if you are feeling fear or uncertainty about the future success of these steps.

Then, over time, those small steps compound into real change.

I had to learn this the hard way to overcome my own procrastination, as a woman going through perimenopause it was even harder because of the brain fog and additional anxiety.  But being honest with myself about where I was avoiding decisions out of fear was empowering - I still needed to build up the courage to take the leap, but awareness really helped.

Read again my previous journal beginning to take authentic and appropriate action if you need a reminder on how to figure out what steps to take and when.

Final Reflection

As we close this Fire Horse series, there is just one question left:

What is one step you can take today?

Not tomorrow.
Not when things feel easier.

Today.

Because the Fire Horse energy is not just about movement.
It’s about choosing to move — even when it feels uncomfortable.
