Fire Horse & Self-Belief: Learning to Trust Yourself in Midlife
Mar 01, 2026
🌿 Over the past few weeks, we’ve been exploring the transition from the reflective energy of the Wood Snake year in 2025, and shifting into the forward-moving energy of the Fire Horse for 2026.
In my other journal posts, I focussed on:
-
Letting go of what no longer fits - the power for you of shedding the old
-
Clearing emotional and energetic clutter to leave space for the new
-
Learning to build momentum without burning yourself out

Closing One Chapter Before You Can Begin Again
The Fire Horse Year - Moving Forward Without Burning Out
In these journal entries I have been focussing on creating space — physically, emotionally, and mentally — so that something new can begin in your life.
But there is another piece that quietly determines whether you succeed in making change, and that is the power of self-belief.
This is not a loud confidence i am talking about.
Not a “fake it till you make it” kind of bolshiness or hustle - because as an introvert, bolshy faking it just isn't my thing...
Instead it is a steady, grounded belief that you can do everything you set your mind upon.
For many women in midlife, that belief has been slowly eroded over the years. It may have started in your youth, or you may have found that as you have lived - your life experiences and influences will have gradually undermined your inherent level of self-belief and you have become less confident than you might have been in your youth.
This is where the Fire Horse year becomes especially relevant and a perfect point in time for you to find that inspiration and momentum you need.
Why So Many Women Struggle With Self-Belief in Midlife
By the time many women reach their 50s, they have spent decades:
-
Putting others first
-
Adapting to the expectations of others or society
-
Sacrificed themselves to hold families together
- Seen their careers undermined in comparison to their male peers
-
Made themselves smaller to keep the peace
Over time, something subtle happens -
You begin to doubt your instincts.
You second-guess decisions.
You look outward for reassurance or permission, rather than inside yourself.
Not because you are any less capable or competent to make decisions for yourself, but because you have learned to survive by being adaptable.
For every decision you are being pulled in multiple directions. This is where I found myself, I had cared for others for so long that I had completely lost sight of myself - my self-belief had been eroded because by neglecting it for so long I no longer knew how to believe in myself.
I was no longer being myself.
I had stopped doing the things I was passionate about.
I had lost touch with what lit me up.
Rebuilding self-belief began when I chose to re-focus my energies on what I wanted to do. One of the biggest decisions was to leave corporate employment, that was draining the life out of me, and start focus on writing and therapy again. It took me a year to actually do it, but in my heart I knew it was the right thing to do - even though it was terrifying.
In Chinese elemental philosophy, the Fire Horse represents independence, courage, and forward movement.
But that energy can only work well when it is supported by inner trust, self-belief and the confidence to make honest choices for yourself. When you are not being true to yourself it is very difficult to find that inner trust.
Without self-belief, momentum is stunted by anxiety.
With self-belief, momentum becomes empowered choice.

Fire Energy and the Confidence of the Heart
In Chinese medicine, Fire is associated with the Heart organ and its influence on our physical and mental wellbeing.
It governs:
-
Self-worth
-
Emotional connection
-
Purpose
-
Joy
-
Inner clarity
When Fire is balanced, we feel:
- Secure in ourselves
- Able to make decisions
- Comfortable being visible
- Open without being overexposed
When Fire is weak or disturbed, we experience:
- Self-doubt
- Overthinking
- People-pleasing
- Fear of getting it wrong
- Emotional exhaustion
So in this Fire Horse year, “confidence” is about reconnecting with your true and authentic self. Learning to hear yourself again and making choices that are right for you and your personal growth and wellbeing.
I know what it feels like to do all of the above, doubting yourself; overthinking; fear of being wrong because wrong is something that has been imposed on you. It takes a shift to move out of this pattern — but you can. I did. And what I learned, I built into my Pathway to help other women do the same.
From Shedding to Self-Trust
The work of the Wood Snake year was about clearing. Clearing out what no longer serves you, clearing out what undermines you, and finding a new way forward.
Self-belief cannot grow when you are still carrying:
-
Old disappointments and self blame
-
Unresolved resentment
-
Lack of proper boundaries that protect you
-
Lingering self-criticism
So if you are still holding onto any of these sabotaging behaviours, this is still a perfect time to deal with them - before you start rebuilding anew.
If you need guidance on how to do this - go back to the previous posts again via the links above and spend some time doing a "clear out the old" to get you in the proper frame of mind ready for fire horse momentum and growth.
Ready for shifting back into self-belief.

What Self-Belief Actually Looks Like for You
A woman who is confident and comfortable in her own skin is something so many of us aspire to, but what does that actually look like on a day to day basis? It will depend on how you live your life and what your aspirations are, and ultimately what feels natural and comfortable to you.
We are all individuals, and our uniqueness is what delivers authenticity - but it will still include actions and boundaries like:
-
Saying no without feeing the need to over-explain
- Feeling comfortable in your own skin
-
Making a decision and standing by it
-
Changing your mind without guilt
-
Not needing constant reassurance from others or society in general
-
Trusting your decisions and instincts
-
Allowing yourself to learn as you go
A lot of these may be alien concepts to you right now, it might have been a long time (if ever) since you have done any or all of these. That's probably a scary thought if you have, but you can relearn these boundaries again.
Some are just a matter of mindset, retraining your subconscious mind out of old habits.
Others will require you to create new habits, taking the time to set up a new habit that replace the old.
Rebuilding Self-Belief Is a Practice, Not a Personality Trait
Self-belief is not something you either have or you don’t - so don’t despair if you’ve come to believe over time that you “just aren’t that confident”.
It is something you can rebuild, no matter where you are in your life. You can rebuild it:
- Quietly.
- Gradually.
- Through small acts of self-respect.
It grows every time you:
- Keep a promise to yourself.
- Speak up when something feels wrong, or stand by what you want.
- Choose what aligns instead of what appeases.
- Allow yourself to change direction without apology or guilt, because you know it is right for you.
This is not about becoming loud, obnoxious, brash or aggressive.
It is about honouring yourself.
The Fire Horse year does not demand that you suddenly become bold and fearless - because this cannot happen overnight. Especially when you have spent so many years afraid.
It begins with trusting your own voice again.

A Question to Sit With
As you move into this next phase, ask yourself:
What could my life look like if I backed myself more fully?
Where have I been waiting for permission, can I just believe in myself rather than waiting for others?
What would change if I trusted my instincts just a little bit more?
You do not need to overhaul your life overnight, I know from experience that as mature women there are so many barriers built up over many years that it can take some time and practice to unwind it all. But starting can create miracles.
You only need to begin by intending to rebuild your trust in yourself.
Because once self-belief strengthens, momentum feels very different because it is backed up by being a more authentic you.
It no longer comes from anxiety, fear or control.
It comes from choice, self-love and authenticity.
Self-belief doesn’t arrive all at once. It grows through action.
If you’re ready to embrace the forward momentum of the Fire Horse and step into a more authentic version of yourself... then my "Get Unstuck Workbook" will help you shift into that mindset and show you how to take those first steps. It helps you release what holds you back (the shedding you still need to complete from 2025) and shows you how to reconnect with what really matters to you.
This is the perfect first step in achieving momentum in this Fire Horse year.

🔥 The Fire Horse year will move with or without you.
The question is — will you keep repeating old patterns, or will you finally step into the woman you know you’re capable of becoming?
The True Woman Rising Pathway is not another inspirational idea.
It is the structured process that helps you:
• Break self-doubt
• Stop self-sabotage
• Build consistent action
• Reclaim who you are
If you are serious about change — don’t wait for “the right time.”
This is it. Stop Waiting - Start Now...
